These days, the world of health is facing a revolution that does not only concern medicine but also includes a broad range of disciplines and many aspects of daily life. Demographic tendencies, the evolution of research and the strategic use of “big data” are bringing about a sea change in the existing model of individual care. Given that this change is effecting an increasingly large group of stakeholders and areas of expertise, the way it is managed requires an inter-disciplinary approach in which the different fields of study interact with each other and, consequently, all are ameliorated in the process.
The transition from universal to precision medicine is the phenomenon that best represents the evolution underway in the world of health, but it is also an excellent example of how to get different approaches to the subject to coexist and interact. Expertise in genomics and molecular biology has to be backed up by legal, social and psychological studies in order to be consonant with the new model of care of the individual.
The considerable potential of individual medicine can be guaranteed, in fact, by gathering and storing a huge quantity of sensitive data that is properly treated and safeguarded. Furthermore, the manifestation of precision medicine means that the financial and economic models of an industry that currently bases its research on drugs that can be sold on a very large scale must be reconsidered. The trend, however, is to steer clear of developing a few drugs that could be taken by a great many people and concentrate instead on developing many drugs each of which will only benefit a few. It means that research focuses on the needs of individuals and the study of the primary element in which pathologies originate – cells.
Studying the extraordinary complexity of human cells will bring about a progressive reduction in, the need for drugs based on a diagnosis of the problem and at the same time, engender an approach to health issues based on prevention, or at the very least, early diagnosis.
It means that great care must be taken to fully understand the delicate mechanisms that regulate the human body. Upsetting the balance necessary for the various biological clocks that determine the life cycle of each and every individual leads to illness or dysfunction. Preventing that could result in a reduction of the morbidity of some illnesses. The same can be said of food as it must not only be of an appropriate quantity, it must also be healthy and it too could become personalized, thereby completing a model of care that really does focus on the individual.
Paying attention to the rhythms and particular requirements of the human body does not, however, mean that the contribution made by technology can be ignored. In the future, in fact, robotics will mean that more than 1.5 billion humanoid machines will exist here on this planet and, equipped with advanced sensors and connected via an “online” network, they will provide a sort of global intelligence that will help solve the problems of everyday life not only in poverty stricken countries but also in those that are rich where aging populations are a constant source of new problems on the issue of treatment and care. Targeted prevention, individual treatment and intelligent machines are, in other words, the elements that will, in the future, help revolutionize the current models of treatment, care and health, lengthening people’s lives and making those lives even more simple and pleasant.
The event ended with a tour of the Visconti Castle in Pavia and of the beautiful exhibition “Pavia, the battle and the future” featuring one of the seven tapestries in the prestigious series by Willem Van Der Mojen based on the drawings of Bernard Van Orley, which originated from Brussels (1528-1530) and are housed at the National Museum of Capodimonte.
