World Economy Dialogue

The evolution of the international economic order in the late 1990s raised the global level of volatility, uncertainty and anxiety. The strong increase in growth over the decade, which had sparked such huge enthusiasm among experts, was countered at the dawn of the new century by a serious alarm signal, thus prompting the Institute to devote a multiannual program to monitoring and exploring the challenges implicit in a global economy. The encounters in this cycle focus on the crisis in the euro area, on energy-related issues and on global economic governance in an increasingly interdependent and globalized environment. With personalities from China, India, Latin America and the United States taking part in the encounters, the debate has focused on global imbalances and on the new equilibrium occasioned by the developing countries’ (specifically BRICS) powerful entry into the global economy.
