Estimates on energy market trends agree on one point: over the next few decades, global demand for energy is bound to grow, conceivably even doubling by the end of the century. In such a scenario, one of humanity’s greatest challenges will be how to produce more and more energy while also limiting CO2 emissions. This is our “energy dilemma”. The world will certainly have to move towards a diversified energy mix, with complementary sources that are neither interchangeable nor opposite. These different sources will compete with each other in an effort to meet new challenges in supply, distribution and containment of consequences for the climate. The creation of such a reliable energy mix will be preceded by an important transition phase, which will be long and complex and will require significant investment. Efforts will have to be shared by all – those on the production side and those on the demand side alike. In this context, hydrocarbons will remain key: not only will they continue to act as the energy system’s “backbone”, but they can help favor the transition, especially to natural gas.
This e-book proposes an analysis of global energy scenarios, looking in particular at the strategic role played by hydrocarbons in Europe as well as prospects for Italy, with a special focus on consequences for the national economy and employment rates.
