The Aspen Institute Italia Seminar on Leadership, Globalization and the Quest for Common Values

In memory of Ennio Presutti *

The appreciation for the Aspen Institute Italia Seminar on Values and Society expressed by many participants from over 30 different countries led to the decision by the Institute to augment its professional development offerings with this additional seminar from 2011.

At the heart of the Aspen Institute Italia Seminar on Leadership, Globalization and the Quest for Common Values are the extraordinary changes that leaders in the 21st century are called upon to interpret and manage. The seminar focuses on the need – given that different cultures, political systems and business approaches have progressively drawn closer – for new interpretive tools in order to map out our course in a society characterized by rapid change. Whilst on one hand we are active participants in an acceleration of technological innovation that has altered the paradigms of our lives, we have also confronting the limits of sustainable growth. The challenges facing us are global in scale, as must be the response, in terms of understanding, setting objectives, resources, strategies and methods. The need for such a global and common approach entails open discourse between varying philosophical or religious worldviews, which differ in their ethical values and cultural underpinnings. The seminar agenda is structured along the lines of the initiative’s five focus topics:

  • the progress of human endeavor
  • democracy, culture and globalization
  • sustainability
  • other worldviews
  • leadership and conscience

The debate is significantly enriched by the diversity of the geographic, personal and professional backgrounds of the 25 or so participants, which contributes towards cultivating an international outlook on entrepreneurial and cultural leadership and promoting discourse between different cultures, with the aim of identifying and building on shared ideas, knowledge and interests.

The purpose of the seminar, conducted in English, is not to arrive at agreed solutions, but rather to highlight the complexity of contemporary world phenomena, and to stimulate the kind of in-depth cultural analysis which gives rise to the emergence of universal values and ideals capable of inspiring a modern and informed approach to leadership. The discussion is prompted and guided along by expert Aspen Institute moderators.

The seminar is a residential event, it's generally held in the spring each year (from 6pm on a Thursday to 1pm on the following Sunday).

Aspen Institute Italia advises that those expressing an interest in participating will not automatically be entitled to receive an invitation. The Institute reserves the right to approve any such requests based on available spaces.

The seminar participation fee covers the cost of meals, overnight stays, reading material, documentation, and taking part in communal activities.
