The Executive Committee, the Association's governing body, is composed of ex officio members as well as 30 members of the General Council, who are nominated in equal number from among the sustaining and ordinary board members.

The Executive Committee nominates the Secretary General, and has the power to revoke that nomination. It nominates the President of the Friends of Aspen and the President of the Aspen Junior Fellows.  The Executive Committee also deliberates on the admission of new members, proposes the dismissal or exclusion of members from the General Council and establishes the criteria upon which ordinary members elect their representatives in the Institute's General Council.
